Including upgrades to the existing system, new simulators for use in training and a long series of smaller systems, there is a total of more than 50 projects involved in establishing the new air traffic management system. Naviair manages the entire process and has responsibility for the integration, while a series of other firms, with Thales in the lead, have supplied the various components. Naviair engineers, technicians and air traffic controllers are therefore also responsible for testing, training and configuration of all systems, in close collaboration with suppliers and the authorities.

The new tower in Kastrup was ready in 2004 and installation of equipment in the facility began at that time. All of the equipment for the air traffic management system was mostly on hand at the end of 2006. Since 2006 the equipment has been tested and used for training.

Since 1 October 2007 the new air traffic management system has been used in test operations. This means that the system uses actual data from the aircraft taking off and landing at Danish airports and from the aircraft that are flying through Danish airspace, while the controllers are “eavesdropping” and practicing.

Final approval is still pending - first and foremost from the documentation that all of the systems can work together and that instruction and training have been performed and have been properly specified. With the final approval in place, Naviair expects to switch to the new air traffic management system on the night of 28-29 December 2007.
